In the beginning…
Cats in the City began in 2007. Founders Shawn Ryan and Dan Lioy wanted to serve the unmet needs of feline family members in the Portland, Oregon, area. Shawn, a social worker specializing in hospice, had been using dogs and cats for animal-assisted therapy. His husband, Dan, is a neuroscientist and animal behaviorist.
What began as a dedicated grooming and boarding enterprise has grown as a result of their clients’ needs—both human and feline. Shawn and Dan added a second cat resort in 2015, a renovated 1906 commercial residence, complete with furnished guest rooms for the cats, and a secure outdoor catio.
Pets on the move
Cats in the City has been transporting their clientele to and from veterinary appointments, the airport, and other destinations, as needed for years. We found clients value the level of care given to each pet, and they have entrusted us with long-distance travel planning and escort.
In 2008 we decided to expand with Go Pet Go, providing international pet relocation and transportation service, because we became experts of coordinating complicated moves.
We are available 24/7, 365 days a year.
Our Vision
We treat every pet like one of our own, because, while they are in our care, that’s exactly how we see them. Every animal is unique to us, and we take the time to understand their individual behavior and needs.
